Vietnam's Robusta Crop Is Forecast to Grow Again

Source: Daily Coffee News

Vietnam's coffee production is forecast to increase again in the 2026/27 crop year. Daily Coffee News, citing a USDA report, puts the forecast at 32.5 million 60-kilogram bags—2.5% above the previous estimate. Robusta accounts for 31.4 million bags, while arabica accounts for 1.1 million.

These are forecasts, not harvested results. Still, the report points to a broader change that home brewers may already notice: robusta is no longer discussed only as a low-cost ingredient for instant coffee or dark espresso blends. Better processing, traceability and growing interest in premium robusta are bringing more distinctive lots to specialty shelves.

That does not mean every robusta will taste the same—or that it should be brewed with a completely different rulebook. Many lots offer heavier body, lower perceived acidity and more bitterness than a typical light-roast arabica. Start with your usual recipe, then adjust one variable at a time. A slightly coarser grind, lower water temperature or shorter contact time can help if the cup feels too intense.

The practical takeaway is simple: treat the species name as useful context, not a verdict on quality. Use a repeatable ratio and timer in Pockista, taste the result, and let the specific coffee tell you what to change.
